Ishigaq author, illustrator at Parksville library
Andy Sibbald invites book lovers of all ages to join him and illustrator Nipi Sibbald for a book reading of ‘Ishigaq: Following Nipster’s Dream’ at the Parksville Library.
Sibbald will read from his book and both will sign copies. Books will be available for purchase.
Ishigaq: Following Nipster’s Dream is suited for 11-14 years olds but adults will enjoy a peek into northern Canadian life, told through the mythology of the Ishigaq – 30-centimetre-tall Little People of Inuit lore who leave no footprints in the snow.
Set in the Canadian arctic, the story follows a group of Little People (Ishigaq) as they journey north to escape the threats of predation, the effects of global warming and their increasing dependence on the Big People.
The story elegantly weaves lessons of communication, leadership, community and the impacts of global warming on Arctic people in a thrilling, humorous, plot-forward narrative that entertains first and educates second.
Andy Sibbald has successfully created a world of true characters and a book full of personality, danger, creatures, feasts, and sled rides.
The Ishigaq series offers kid-friendly insight into the skills and knowledge that are required to live in one of the harshest environments in the world. This book is about resiliency, determination, and personal strength: something we can all use on our journey in life.
Sibbald lived in Nunavut for 10 years, the NorthWest Territories for two years, and the Yukon for eight years. He has a Master’s degree in community development and the majority of his career involved working closely with Inuit and First Nations.
